Home insurance: what does the law say?

Tenant: an obligation

For all tenants, Law No. 89-462 of July 6, 1989, specifies that they are required to have insurance against the risks for which they are liable as tenants. Home insurance is therefore a prerequisite for accessing housing, and the landlord can request an annual certificate of home insurance. This insurance guarantees compensation for the landlord in the event of a claim.

Landlords: a strong recommendation

Unlike tenants, landlords are not legally required to have home insurance. However, civil liability insurance, which covers material or bodily damage caused to others, is essential. Multi-risk home insurance will cover the dwelling and the occupants' belongings in the event of fire, water damage, break-ins, and other types of claims.
